Winter Storage & Maintenance

Fountains

Winterization

Option 1 – Store Indoors

If possible -  move your fountain indoors for the winter.

Option 2 – Prepare For Outdoor Storage

If unable to bring indoors – continue with the steps below.

Step 1 – Remove Internal Components

Remove stoppers, drain plugs, tubing, pumps and lights. If you choose to keep the pump in the fountain, it must be completely dry and wrapped in plastic with a towel to prevent moisture buildup. Storing the pump indoors is the recommended option.

Step 2 – Completely Drain the Fountain

It is important to prevent water from accumulating in your fountain. Freezing and thawing of water can cause damage to your pump and cracks to form in your fountain. Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove water from all tiers and basins. Remove drain plugs to let water flow out.

Step 3 – Clean the Fountain

Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris from your fountain. Use a garden hose to rinse out any mud or dirt that has accumulated. Use a mild soap and a soft sponge to clean your fountain. Do not use any abrasive tools or harsh chemicals. Rinse thoroughly and dry all surfaces with a towel.

Step 4 – Raise the Fountain Off the Ground

If unable to store your fountain indoors or in a dry covered location, raise your fountain above ground. Use wood strips or risers to elevate the base slightly. This will prevent the base from freezing to the ground, which can cause cracking.

Step 5 – Cover the Fountain Properly

Ensure your fountain is fully dry before covering. Always use a breathable material. Fountain covers are available for purchase through Massarelli’s. Do not cover your fountain in plastic. Plastic can trap moisture which can damage the finish. Always use a breathable material.

To Install a Massarelli Fountain Cover:

Step 1 – Center and drape the cover over the fountain and gently tighten the drawstring – do not overtighten.

Step 2 – Grab the cover from the top and lift the cover up until the cover opening touches the bottom the shell.

Step 3 – While holding the cover above the fountain with one hand, grab the cover with your other hand just above the top piece of the fountain. Tie off the off the cover with a piece of rope.

Step 4 – Make sure the cover is taut to avoid pooling of water or snow.

Throughout winter, check the fountain to make sure:

  • No water or snow is pooling on the cover
  • No ice has collected underneath
  • The cover is snug and secure

Maintenance

Regular Cleaning

  • Remove leaves, twigs, and debris weekly.
  • For algae and white scale control – avoid chlorine based cleaners as they will damage the finish.
  • Use a fountain safe clarifier, algaecide, or natural enzyme based cleaner.

Keep the Pump Submerged

  • Check water leaves frequently.
  • Refill your fountain daily or weekly depending on usage and weather.
  • Always run your fountain with the pump fully underwater. Low water levels will burn out the pump.

Urns & Planters

Winterization

Option 1 – Store Indoors

If possible -  move your urn or planter indoors for the winter.

Option 2 – Prepare For Outdoor Storage

If unable to bring indoors – prepare your urn or planter for outdoor storage.

Step 1 – Remove soil and plants

Soil retains moisture and can freeze – expanding inside the urn or planter. If you plan to leave the soil in, ensure that the drain holes are fully clear.

Step 2 – Raise Off the Ground

Use two wood strips or rubber risers under the urn or planter to keep them off frozen surfaces. This will prevent the base from freezing to the ground, which can cause cracks.

Step 3 – Wrap or Cover (optional)

For added protection, wrap the urn or planter loosely in breathable fabric like burlap to reduce exposure to snow and ice. Avoid airtight covers or plastic covers that can trap moisture inside.

Step 4 – Drainage Check Up

Inspect drain holes periodically during the winter. If ice or snow builds up, gently brush it away. Do not chip at frozen water, which can stress the surface.

Maintenance

Encourage Drainage

  • Line the bottom of the urn or planter with weed barrier fabric.
  • Add a layer of stones (larger than the drain hole).
  • Cover the stones with another layer of weed barrier.
  • Fill with soil and plant as desired.

Bird Baths

Winterization

Option 1 – Store Indoors

If possible -  move your bird bath indoors for the winter.

Option 2 – Prepare For Outdoor Storage

If unable to bring indoors – prepare your bird bath for outdoor storage.

For One Piece Bird Baths

Step 1 – Turn the bird bath upside down to prevent water from collecting in the shell.

Step 2 – Raise the bird bath on wood strips or rubber risers to avoid freezing to the ground.

For Two Piece Bird Baths

Step 1 – Turn the shell upside down and place it on the pedestal to prevent water from collecting in the shell.

Step 2 – Raise the bird bath on wood strips or rubber risers to avoid freezing to the ground.

Do not use heaters or deicers in your bird bath – they may cause damage to the finish.

Maintenance

Clean Regularly

  • Scrub the shell weekly with a soft soap and sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all residue.
  • Avoid chlorine, bleach, or harsh chemicals that can harm birds or damage the finish.

Prevent Algae Buildup

  • Use a bird safe water clarifier or natural enzyme treatment periodically.
  • Avoid letting debris like leaves or grass clippings collect in the shell.

Keep the Water Fresh

  • Change water at least every 2-3 days, or more frequently in hot weather.
  • Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and algae.

Monitor Water Levels

  • On hot or windy days, check and refill with water as needed to ensure birds always have access to fresh clean water!
